VIOLENCE: AN ATTEMPT OF DEFINITION AND JUSTIFICATION
Violence is a very vague concept understood and interpreted in various
ways. At the level of experience, it seems that we all “know” what violen-
ce is, but when we try to determine its basic characteristics and/or to defi-
ne it, we find ourselves facing a difficult task. The primary purpose of this
paper is to show the theoretical complexity of questions concerning vio-
lence, its definition and justification. The first part deals with two main
approaches of understanding and defining violence: a narrower approach
that equates violence with the use of force and a broader approach that de-
fines violence as a violation. This is followed by Bufacchi‘s definition of vi-
olence as a violation of integrity, which takes an intermediate position be-
tween the two mentioned approaches. The last part deals with the issue of
the moral justification of violence.

VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL (IN)JUSTICE: AN INTERVIEW WITH
VITTORIO BUFACCHI
V tem intervjuju profesor Vittorio Bufacchi podrobno preučuje odnos
med dvema enako zahtevnima problemoma, in sicer nasiljem in družbeno
(ne)pravičnostjo (ter njunim presečiščem). V uvodnem delu govori o tem,
kaj je sprožilo njegovo lastno zanimanje za nasilje. Hkrati predstavi glav-
ni prispevek filozofije k razpravam o nasilju. V osrednjem delu intervjuja
profesor Bufacchi posebno pozornost nameni »standardni« distinkciji
med »ozkim« in »širokim« pojmovanjem nasilja (vključno s prednost-
mi in slabostmi obeh pojmovanj). Prav tako razpravlja o nekaterih najbolj
perečih sodobnih izzivih, s katerimi se soočajo znanstveniki, ki se ukvar-
jajo z nasilnim ekstremizmom oz. političnim nasiljem na splošno. V za-
ključnem delu intervjuja obravnava nekatere izmed zapostavljenih vidi-
kov problematike nasilja (tako na praktični kot na teoretični ravni).

ship between two equally challenging issues, i.e. violence and social (in)
justice [and their intersection]. In the introductory part, he dicusses what
triggered his own interest in violence. At the same time, he examines
philosophy‘s main contribution to discussions over violence. In the cen-
tral part of the interview Prof. Bufacchi revisits the ‚standard‘ distinction
