Foreign language acquisition: Younger students views
The following paper presents the results of a research into the attitude of
young learners toward the introduction of the first foreign language (FL 1)
into the second grade of one third of Slovenian public schools. FL 1 was first
introduced in the school year 2014/2015. Pupils' attitudes towards the learn-
ing of FL 1 may vary significantly, which may affect both the language in-
take and output. Our aim was to carry out a research into the attitudes of
young language learners toward FL 1. A descriptive, causal and non-exper-
imental research paradigm was implemented in our research. The results
section presents descriptive statistics, kurtosis and skewness coefficients,
t-test for independent samples (variables gender and age) as well as an anal-
ysis of variance and a post-hoc test for the variable school. Three research
hypotheses were drawn up; RH 1: There are statistically significant differ-
ences in attitude of young learners toward the introduction of FL 1 regard-
ing their gender, RH 2: There are statistically significant differences in atti-
tude of young learners toward the introduction of FL 1 regarding their age,
and RH 3: There are statistically significant differences in attitude of young
learners toward the introduction of FL 1 regarding the school, where FL 1 is
taught. The results show that we could almost entirely accept RH 3. Second-
ly, we could only partly accept RH 2. Finally, we could almost entirely ac-
cept RH 1. As far as RH3 is concerned, the LSD post-hoc test showed quite
a few differences among some elementary schools, mostly between ES An-
ton Ukmar, Koper, and ES Dragotin Kette, Ilirska Bistrica, ES Solkan and
ES Voličina.
