kusije v mednarodni raziskovalni skupnosti pogosto osredotočajo na ana-
lize tega trenda v posameznih nacionalnih kontekstih, se prispevek osre-
primerjalni vpogled v slovenske izkušnje z razvojem tega trenda. V zaključ-
nem delu utemeljuje potrebo po upoštevanju kompleksne medsebojne po-
vezanosti globalnih, evropskih, nacionalnih in institucionalnih kontekstov.

Model of higher education internationalization
in the Netherlands: the possibility or an ideal difficult
to reach?
Undoubtedly, internationalisation of higher education is one of the most
visible trends, which guides the development of higher education in the
21st century. Since the ongoing discussions in international research com-
munity often focus on the analysis of this trend in individual national con-
texts, this contribution presents the Dutch model of internationalisation of
higher education. First, it seeks answers to the conceptual question what
is internationalisation in higher education (definition, activities) and ad-
dresses afterwards the how question by examining policies and strategies
of internationalisation at national and institutional level of higher educa-
tion, which are first placed also in wider international (European) context.
In this part, the contribution focuses also on rationales for internationali-
sation of higher education (the why question). Since the Dutch model often
serves as a source of inspiration for the development of internationalisation
policies in other higher education environments, the contribution also pro-
vides comparative insight into Slovenian experiences with the development
of this trend. In the final part, it justifies that the complex interconnected-
ness between global, European, national and institutional contexts need to
be taken into account.
Keywords: Netherlands, internationalisation, concept, policies, Slovenia
