od as chronic. In research, there is a lot of emphasis on identifying the risk
factors for increased stress during the time of COVID-19, but less is known
about why some individuals associate the duration of the pandemic with
lower levels of stress, so the purpose of the current research was to fill this
research gap. A thematic analysis was performed on the responses of male
and female participants who experienced the second (n = 398) and (n = 201)
third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic as less stressful compared to the
first. In the results, 12 themes were identified in the second wave and 10 the-
mes in the third wave, which represent reasons for experiencing less stress
in the following waves of the pandemic compared to the first. The findings
show that less stress is mainly related to the adaptation of individuals and
more available information about the disease COVID-19. Also, some the-
mes appeared in both the second and third waves, which suggests the sta-
bility of the reasons. The results of this study can be utilized for further re-
search in understanding stress responses in relation to unexpected events
and informing the public about potential individual reactions to an extra-
ordinary event such as COVID-19.
