Students’ participation at school (S_SCHPART) is composed of 6 items:
− Active participation in an organized debate (IS3G16A);
− voting for class representative or school parliament (IS3G16B);
− taking part in decision-making about how the school is run

(IS3G16C);
− taking part in discussions at a student assembly (IS3G16D);
− becoming a candidate for class representative or school parlia-

ment (IS3G16E) and
− participating in an activity to make the school more environmen-

tally friendly (e.g. through water-saving or recycling) (IS3G16F)
(Kohler et al., 2018).
Items used a 3 - point Likert scale with the following categories: No,
I have never done this, Yes, I have done this but more than a year ago, and
Yes, I have done this within the last twelve months.
Students’ discussion of political and social issues outside school (S_POL-
DISC) is composed of 4 items:
− Talking with your parent(s) about political or social issues (IS-
3G14A);
− talking with friends about political or social issues (IS3G14D);
− talking with your parent(s) about what is happening in other
countries (IS3G14E) and
− talking with friends about what is happening in other countries
(IS3G14F) (Kohler et al., 2018).
Items used a 4 - point Likert scale with the following categories: Nev-
er or hardly ever, Monthly (at least once a month), Weekly (at least once a
week), and Daily or almost daily.
