In this monograph, we present the key results of the European regional mod-
ule ICCS with an emphasis on the Slovenian results in the 2016 cycle. On an in-
ternational level it is coordinated and supervised by the International Associa-
tion for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), and the Educational
Research Institute (Pedagoški inštitut in Slovene) is responsible for the study in
Slovenia. A total of 2,844 eighth-graders participated in the European region-
al module of ICCS.
The European regional module of ICCS 2016 included 11 items, which fo-
cused on the following interests and views about civic issues, concerning Eu-
rope: a) Students’ perceptions of their European identity; b) Students’ reports
on opportunities to learn about Europe at school; c) Students’ views on Eu-
ropean citizens’ freedom to reside and work within Europe; d) Students’ atti-
tudes towards immigration; e) Students’ views on cooperation among Europe-
an countries; f ) Students’ perceptions of discrimination in Europe; g) Students’
perceptions of the future of Europe; h) Students’ perceptions of their life in the
future; i) Students’ attitudes toward political and ethical consumerism; j) Stu-
dents’ views on the age at which young people should acquire different rights
and obligations; and k) Students’ perceptions of the European Union.
Slovenia participated for the first time in CivEd 1999 and has been a reg-
ular participant ever since (namely in ICCS 2009 and ICCS 2016). Conducted in
cycles, the study allows us to use the same items in order to report on trends
and make comparisons between the cycles.
