The present monograph presents the results of the evaluation
study whose central aim was to assess the curriculum for Cit-
izenship, patriotic education and ethics from 2008 as well as the cur-
riculum for Citizenship education and ethics and the curriculum for
the primary education subject Society. Several analyses have been car-
ried out as part of this evaluation, including [i] the examination of the-
oretical discussions on citizenship education; [ii] the review of the rel-
evant international documents on citizenship education; [iii] the anal-
ysis of basic concepts in the field of citizenship education; [iv] the anal-
ysis of the representation of individual social content within the two
elementary school subjects, i.e. Society and Citizenship, patriotic ed-
ucation and ethics; and [v] the analysis of the results of international
comparative research on citizenship education. The present monograph
therefore examines in detail various issues associated with citizenship
education in a plurally diverse polity with a special emphasis on the sta-
tus, scope and justification in the curriculum of elementary education.

The introductory part of the monograph places the issue of citizen-
ship education in the wider context of social changes that have led to an
increased interest of theorists, policy-makers and teachers in the area of
citizenship education and citizenship theory. Special emphasis has been
devoted to the social context of different conceptions of citizenship (e.g,
liberal, republican) and the presentation of the problems and challeng-
es faced by different conceptions of citizenship. This is followed by thee
presentation of the status, the goals and the overall rationale of citizen-
ship education in contemporary plural society and an analysis of con-
