Oswald Ducrot was born on November 27, 1930
in Paris. After he graduated in philosophy from
the École Normale Supérieure, he was teaching philoso-
phy in several high schools in France. Before he became
the research director at the École des Hautes Études en
Sciences Sociales in Paris (1973), he worked at the Centre
National de Recherches Scientifiques (VNRS) and col-
laborated with André Martinet.
Oswald Ducrot was lecturing at several universities in
Europe, North Africa, North and South America, and he
held courses, among others, at the universities of Campi-
nas, Stuttgart, Montreal, Geneva, Berkeley nad Freie Uni-
versität in Berlin.
