V predavanju bo dr. Collin Bjork (Massey University, Nova Zelandija) skozi analizo vpliva dveh splošno priljubljenih tehnologij – programov za ustvarjanje podkastov in programov za odkrivanje plagiatorstva – prikazal vlogo »tehnoloških rešitev« v retoričnem izobraževanju.
Predavanje bo potekalo v angleščini.

Vsebina predavanja:
Dr. Collin Bjork bo v predavanju prikazal retorično izobraževanje skozi vpliv dveh splošno priljubljenih tehnologij – programov za ustvarjanje podkastov in programov za odkrivanje plagiatorstva. Podkasti so razmeroma uveljavljen pristop pri poučevanju principov klasične in sodobne retorike. V predavanju bo dr. Bjork pogled na izobraževalno vlogo podkastov razširil v iskanje odgovora na vprašanje, kako in ali sploh retorična pedagogika, usmerjena v ustvarjanje dokumentarnih pripovednih podkastov lahko spodbuja družbene spremembe. V drugem delu bo predavanje usmeril v analizo dobičkonosne industrije plačljivih programov na področju rabe digitalnih tehnologij v izobraževanju (t. i. EdTech). Pod drobnogled bo vzel programsko opremo za odkrivanje plagiatorstva in umetne inteligence, ki jo prodaja podjetje TurnItIn in pokazal, kako TurnItIn ogroža intelektualno lastnino študentov, suverenost podatkov avtohtonih prebivalcev (t. i. Indigenous data sovereignty), kulturo šolskega razreda in retorično izobraževanje v širšem smislu. Predavanje bo zaključil z razmislekom o tveganjih uporabe »tehnoloških rešitev« v sodobni retorični pedagogiki.
Predstavitev predavatelja:
Dr. Collin Bjork je izredni profesor angleščine in medijskih študij na Massey University, Nova Zelandija. V letih 2023-24 je bil Fulbrightov štipendist na Univerzi v Ljubljani v Sloveniji. Njegov raziskovalni opus je zelo raznolik. Objavlja raziskave s področja klasične in sodobne retorične teorije in prakse. Pisal je o časovnih vidikih retoričnega ethosa pri Platonu, izzivih retoričnega izobraževanja v spletnih tečajih, vplivu umetne inteligence na pisanje itd. Prispevke objavlja v uglednih znanstvenih revijah, kot so Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Philosophy & Rhetoric, Computers & Composition, Convergence in drugod. Pred kratkim je uspešno pridobil sredstva za projekt o raziskovanju odnosa med podkasti o resničnih zločinih in retoriko. Rezultati tega projekta bodo objavljeni v monografiji in v obliki podkasta. Trenutno je tudi izvršni producent Pod Uni, podkasta o ustvarjanju podkastov.

In his lecture, Dr Collin Bjork, PhD from Massey University in New Zealand, will explore the impact of “technological solutions” on rhetoric teaching by examining two widely used technologies: podcasting and plagiarism detection software.

Lecture:
This lecture considers the impact of two popular technologies—podcasting and plagiarism detection software—on rhetorical education. Podcasting has already been used by educators to teach both ancient and contemporary rhetorical principles. This presentation extends this educational research by examining how a rhetorical pedagogy oriented around narrative nonfiction podcasting may, or may not, foster social change. Next, this lecture turns to the for-profit EdTech industry and interrogates the plagiarism-detection and AI-detection software sold by TurnItIn. This presentation illustrates how TurnItIn threatens student intellectual property, Indigenous data sovereignty, classroom culture, and rhetorical education more broadly. The lecture concludes by reflecting on the stakes of employing “technological solutions” to respond to pedagogical issues in rhetorical education.
Biography:
Collin Bjork is a Senior Lecturer in English and Media Studies at Massey University in Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2023-24, he was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Collin is a “free-range” rhetorician who enjoys publishing research about a wide variety of rhetorical topics both ancient and contemporary. He has written about the evolution of Socrates’ ethos over time, the challenges of rhetorical education in online courses, the impact of artificial intelligence on writing, and more. His research can be read in Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Philosophy & Rhetoric, Computers & Composition, Convergence, and elsewhere. Recently, Collin was awarded a grant to conduct research about the relationship between true crime podcasting and rhetoric. The results of this project will be published in both book and podcast forms. He is also executive producer of Pod Uni, a podcast about podcasting.
